Tormos
The local elections came to a nail biting finale in Tormos, the new mayor being decided by a flip of a coin! After the Local elections both the right wing PP and left wing PSOE were in a stalemate with 109 votes each. The PP suggested that each party should rule for two years, the PSOE decided to gamble and for all four, and as a result the ‘flipping’ took place in Denia Court on Monday. Judge Javier Reyes flipped the coin in the full glare of the press and shouted ‘Heads PSOE; tails PP’ The coin landed tails up giving the victory to PP leader Javier Ripoll, now the new Mayor of Tormos.
Ripoll said that he felt ‘very fortunate’ and that ‘Luck had smiled down on his party’. Ripoll stated that he would continue with the land reclassifying exercise, (reparcelación) required for developing the Cascalls area.
PSOE leader Maite Estrada committed the party to working hard for the village, “which has given us its support in increasing our number of seats from two to four.”
Pego
In Pego the 17 councilors’ seats and the mayor’s office were up for grabs. Four candidates for mayor resulted in a close run count that showed Carmelo Ortola, now an independent candidate being returned as Mayor after a coalition with the major opposition parties to the PP’s candidate Maite Pasqual
