Javea Tourist Information
Javea is arguably one of the most beautiful towns on the Northern Costa Blanca, a far cry from the high rise of Benidorm just along the cost, Javea is more in keeping with St Ives or Bordeaux, but with the climate advantages. It has that wonderful appeal of secluded coves, rugged coastline and caves where fishing and scuba diving/Snorkeling are an absolute delight! As well as the less strenuous past time of sunbathing.
New building regulations in Javea prevent high rise monstrosities and protect the exclusive appeal of Javea.
Javea is situated about 100Km’s from Valencia and 90 Km’s from Alicante. If based in Monte Pego no more than 15-20 minutes will get you to this beautiful town. Road signs will be signed as ‘Javea’ or ‘Xabia’ still pronounced ‘Havia’
Javea has been quite rightly voted environmentally near perfect, by the World Health Organisation and boasts 320 days of sunshine a year.
There are three areas to the town:
Javea Old Town
The town whilst appearing modern has only to be scratched to discover the rich history that lies beneath. The fortified Gothic church (San Bartolome) is a fascinating building, which has an indoor market attached, from where you can source local produce. Coupled with the museum ‘Museo Etnografico’ 'Soler Blasco' which explains the history of the coast from Paleolithic times through Iberian, Roman and Medieval times.
In 1244, King Jamie claimed Javea back from the Moors. In the 14th century, King Jamie II built a further fortress and the town’s walls along the streets of Maria Gallard, Primicies, Major and Roques. You can wander down ancient narrow streets, listen to the locals discussing the Nations and Worlds woes, and here young love in the form of mopeds with lively youngsters gaily dressed trying to impress all around. The local market on a Thursday is a must. Built with original Tosca sandstone the Town is a delight of rich trappings of medieval history.
The Port of Javea
This is our favorite part of Javea, the bars and cafes are far removed from the hustle and bustle of other seaside towns, and this is where the pure charm of the Town draws you in. Autumn, Winter, Spring or Summer evenings all present a beautiful setting for total relaxation.
Pretty houses all whitewashed, appear like white enameled soldiers guarding the port and the fishermen who return with their local catches. Just sit at one of the many restaurants and the chances are the fish you eat is the fish from the boat in the distance.
Not limited in its appeal, many bars and cafes together with good quality shops and the mandatory array of Immobilier’s. The whole area is bustling with activity. You can’t escape the genuine Spanish working community that Javea is and remains.
Look out for the landmark of the Port area which is the church of Our Lady of Loreto with a roof which has been designed to appear like the hull of a ship.
The Beach of Javea (Arenal)
The Arenal area is just to the right of the main town, fronted with numerous restaurants and properties the beach is a fantastic ‘Blue Flag’ beach wide and white! Evening time is just ideal for a lovely stroll along the prom.
The summer evenings bring our numerous stalls selling handmade crafted items. The bars provide live local music, as well as the more lively discos.
Shallow water, wide clean sands make this ideal for the whole family. Plenty of car parking, but get there early to guarantee a place, or why not just jump on a bus from one of the less populated areas. Bike hire is also very popular in Spain and numerous cycle lanes provide safety that is to be admired in the UK. Sit back relax eat Tapas. Paella or dare I say it local Fish and Chips, you can’t escape it! But you can enjoy it!
Plenty of accommodation to rent, ranging from apartments on the water front to sumptuous villas in the green hills. The choice is yours. Check out our members in the area.
Population of Javea
Javea although quintessentially Spanish has a large Ex Pat population who take an active part in local politics, one of the local Ex Pat characters is Mr. Cabban who as a retired chartered accountant, is Vice President of the Nuevo Javea Party which has fielded 5 British Candidates of the total 21 candidates in the 2007 election.
